Short history of dishes

Talking about Yau Kee, the first picture that come into the locals’ mind is the Curry Chicken Bun. As its name implies, it is a dish that using bread to wrap the curry chicken. This innovative way of cooking not only a gimmick but it also has the function of keeping the food fresh and warm.

The invention of curry chicken bun is closely related to the childhood of the Yau Kee’s owner, Yau Hon Wah. Back at his childhood time, he used to play at river or waterfall and play together with his friends there. They brought food along with them every time they went out to picnic at the riverside after they feeling tired. Their favorite food back then is curry chicken. In order to further satisfy their stomach, they also bought some bread along to eat with the curry chicken. At that time, the idea that eating curry chicken with bread is plant in the mind of the owner of Yau Kee.

Before the invention of curry chicken bun, there are people who use flour to wrap the chicken and cook it in the fire because people believe it can enhance the taste and fragrance of the dish. According to the owner of the restaurant, the flour that use to wrap the chicken are not consumable. Therefore, the owner further enhance it by using the bread to wrap the chicken. Surprisingly, the combination is very satisfy and outstanding.

Then, curry chicken bun was introduced to the market in Yau Hon Wah own restaurant (Yau Kee). Within years, it is now one of the most iconic food in local as well as for the tourist. Currently, there are 2 flavors of chicken bun offering, which are curry and herbal flavor. The restaurant also offer a wide variety of Chinese dishes for customers.

Customer feedback

We have tasted the curry flavor and herbal flavor of the chicken bun during our visitation to the restaurant. The combination of the bread and curry are superb. The moment that the bread is cut, the smell and the heat of the curry chicken emitted, which stimulate our appetite very much. For the herbal flavour chicken, the taste of the herb was absorbed completely in the chicken, making it taste very good.
